Girls Gymnastics Classes in Queens, NY for Ages 5 and Up

Preschool gymnastics at Lana’s Gymnastics Club is a 55 minute class for children aged 3.5 to 5, taught in our Kinder Gym on Main Street in Flushing. It is the first class most children take on their own, without a parent on the floor, and it is designed around that step as much as around gymnastics.

Children at this age are not learning gymnastics so much as learning how to learn a physical skill. That is the real curriculum. The cartwheels come with it.

What Preschool Gymnastics Covers

Classes are built around fundamental movement patterns, delivered as games. A 4 year old will not repeat a drill fifteen times because a coach asked. She will do it twenty times if it is a game with a turn order.

  • Locomotor skills. Running, galloping, skipping, hopping, jumping and landing on two feet.
  • Balance. Floor beams and low beams, forward walks, sideways walks, holds, and stepping over obstacles.
  • Body shapes. Tuck, straddle, pike, straight and arch. These five shapes are the vocabulary every gymnastics skill is built from.
  • Rolls and tumbling. Log rolls, forward rolls with support, and early cartwheel progressions.
  • Hanging and climbing. Bar hangs, swings, climbing ropes and ladders, which build the grip and shoulder strength that everything else depends on.
  • Jumping and air awareness. Trampoline work with shaping, plus jumps off low mats and boxes onto a soft landing.
  • Listening in a group. Lining up, waiting a turn, following two-step instructions and stopping on a signal.

Our Kinder Gym: Built for This Age Group

Preschool classes are held in our Kinder Gym, a dedicated space with soft multi-shaped mats and equipment scaled for preschool-aged children rather than shrunk-down adult apparatus. Low beams, small bars, soft climbing shapes, barrels, rings and trampolines are all sized so a 4 year old can attempt something independently and succeed.

That matters more than it sounds. A child who can only reach an apparatus with an adult lifting her never gets the experience of doing it herself, which is the entire point at this age. Our full facility is maintained to USAG safety standards, and equipment in the Kinder Gym is chosen with a preschooler’s proportions and reaction time in mind.

Preschool classes run at a ratio of 1 coach to 7 students. Our coaches are certified through the USA Gymnastics Safe Sport Trained program and hold CPR and First Aid certification, and equipment is inspected regularly against safety standards.

Why Ages 3.5 to 5 Is the Right Window

Three and a half to five is a genuine developmental sweet spot for starting gymnastics. Balance systems are maturing quickly, children are strong enough to support their own bodyweight in basic positions, and they have just become able to follow multi-step instructions in a group setting.

Research and coaching experience both point to real gains at this age in:

  • Gross motor development and bilateral coordination
  • Proprioception, the sense of where the body is in space
  • Focus and concentration, practiced in short repeated bursts
  • Language and social skills, through turn taking, instruction following and naming shapes and skills
  • Self-esteem, built from a visible sequence of small wins

What Parents Can Expect

Frequency. Preschool classes typically meet once a week. That is the right dose at this age. More is not better for a 4 year old, and a single consistent weekly class produces steady progress without fatigue or resistance.

Class length. 55 minutes, structured as a warm-up, a rotation through three or four stations, and a closing game or stretch. The rotation format is deliberate, because attention spans at this age are measured in minutes.

Drop off. This is a parent-free class. For many families it is the first one. Some children walk straight in. Some need two or three weeks. Both are normal and our coaches handle both routinely.

Watching. Parents can watch from the viewing area. We do ask that you resist calling out instructions, because a child looking for a parent’s approval is a child not listening to her coach.

Progress. Expect visible change in confidence before you see change in skills. The cartwheel takes a few months. Willingness to try something new in front of a group often takes three weeks.

What comes next. Around age 5, children move into Girls Gymnastics or Boys Gymnastics, where classes lengthen and the four Olympic events are introduced properly.

Preschool Gymnastics starts at 3.5. If your child is 2.5 to 3.5, Tiny Tots is the right fit. If she is 2 to 3 and not ready to separate from you, start with Mommy and Me.

No. Preschool Gymnastics is an independent class, which is part of what it teaches. You are welcome to watch from the viewing area.

It happens, and it is not a sign this was a mistake. Our coaches will bring her in gradually, and most children settle within the first two or three weeks. Talk to the coach so we can plan the approach together.

Once a week for preschool students. That is what we recommend at this age and it is enough for consistent progress.

Yes. Preschool Gymnastics is co-ed. Boys and girls both split off into gender-specific programs around age 5.

Girls wear a gymnastics leotard, boys wear athletic shorts and a plain t-shirt. Avoid zippers, buttons and buckles, which catch on mats and equipment. Hair tied back, no jewelry, bare feet. Send a labelled water bottle, and come dressed for class rather than planning to change here.
