Mommy and Me Gymnastics Classes in Queens, NY for Ages 2 to 3

Mommy and Me at Lana’s Gymnastics Club is a 45 minute parent-and-child gymnastics class for children aged 2 to 3, held in our Kinder Gym on Main Street in Flushing. You are on the floor with your child for the whole class, guided by a coach.

It is also a Daddy and Me class, a Grandma and Me class, and a Nanny and Me class. Whoever brings your child is who does the class with them, and that is entirely normal here.

What a Mommy and Me Class Looks Like

Forty five minutes, structured as a warm-up and then a rotation through stations, with a coach leading and you supporting your own child. There is no expectation that you are athletic and no expectation that your 2 year old follows instructions perfectly.

What is in the Kinder Gym for this class:

  • Colorful soft mats in multiple shapes for climbing, crawling over, and safe falling
  • Trampolines and bouncers for controlled bouncing and early air awareness
  • Balls and toys for throwing, catching, kicking and tracking
  • Barrels for rolling over, which builds core strength and spatial awareness
  • Rings and bars at toddler height for hanging and supported swinging
  • Low beams for first balance work, with your hand available

Coaches guide both of you through the activities, at a ratio of 1 coach to 6 pairs. Your job is mostly to be present, encourage, and occasionally act as a spotter for a child who wants to try something slightly beyond herself.

Why Parent-and-Child Gymnastics Works at This Age

Two year olds do not learn well from strangers in a room without a familiar adult. That is not a shortcoming to be trained out of them, it is developmentally correct. Mommy and Me works with that instead of against it.

What your child gets:

Coaches guide both of you through the activities, at a ratio of 1 coach to 6 pairs. Your job is mostly to be present, encourage, and occasionally act as a spotter for a child who wants to try something slightly beyond herself.

  • Gross motor development at exactly the stage where walking becomes running, climbing and jumping
  • Balance and coordination practiced on surfaces that are not flat floors
  • Confidence to try in a new place, with you as the safe base she keeps returning to
  • Early social exposure to other children her age without the pressure of separation
  • Language growth, because movement plus naming is one of the strongest vocabulary builders at this age

What you get, which we should say out loud: forty five minutes of undistracted time with your child in an environment designed for her, with no phone, no screen, and no chores in eyeline. Parents tell us this is the actual reason they re-enroll. Shared physical activity is well documented to strengthen the parent-child bond and improve non-verbal communication between you.

What Parents Can Expect

Frequency. Once a week. That is the right dose for a 2 year old, and the class is designed as a weekly ritual rather than a training program.

Class length. 45 minutes. A 2 year old is genuinely done at about the 40 minute mark, and the class is built to finish before that point rather than after it.

You are participating. Wear something you can move and sit on the floor in. Bare feet. This is not a drop-off class.

Behavior. Some children will not do a station. Some will do one station eleven times. Some will spend ten minutes watching. All of that is fine and none of it means the class is not working. Coaches will not push your child and we would ask that you do not either.

What comes next. At around 2.5, children who are ready to be on the floor without you can move into Tiny Tots. There is no fixed date for that transition. Some children are ready at 2.5 and some at 3.5, and both are normal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mommy and Me Gymnastics

Yes. It is a Mommy and Me and Daddy and Me program, and grandparents, nannies and other caregivers are equally welcome. Whoever brings your child does the class.

Our Mommy and Me class starts at age 2. Below that, children generally do not get enough out of the structured stations to justify the class. Come back at 2 and she will be ready.

No. You will be walking, kneeling, holding a hand and occasionally lifting your own child. That is the whole physical requirement.

Yes. The class runs in our Kinder Gym on soft multi-shaped mats and equipment sized for preschool-aged children, and you are within arm’s reach of your child throughout. Classes run at a ratio of 1 coach to 6 students. Our coaches are USA Gymnastics Safe Sport Trained and certified in CPR and First Aid, and equipment is inspected regularly.

Very common, particularly in the first two or three weeks. Sit at the edge with her and let her watch. Nearly every child joins in once the room stops being new. We do not push toddlers and we would ask you not to either.

Mommy and Me is ages 2 to 3 with you on the floor. Tiny Tots is ages 2.5 to 3.5 without you, and it is a step up in independence rather than in difficulty. Many families do Mommy and Me for a session or two and then move across.

Girls are required to wear a gymnastics leotard. Long hair should be tied back off the face and neck, and jewelry should be left at home. Gymnastics is done in bare feet, so no socks or sneakers are needed on the floor. Leotards allow full freedom of movement and let coaches see body positions clearly, which matters for both technique and safety.

Comfortable fitted clothing for your child, with no zippers, buttons or buckles. A leotard works well for girls and a fitted t-shirt with shorts is fine for either. For you, wear something you can kneel, sit and move on the floor in. Bare feet for both of you, no jewelry, and a labelled water bottle for your child.

Pricing per session is listed in our online parent portal, or call (718) 263-2121 and we will walk you through it.
